This basketball myth has been around for years, and will most likely continue to be told in the future.

The fact of the matter is that many things that are often considered “fancy” or “flashy” at one time are effective and go on to become considered fundamentals of the game.

There was a time when dribbling between the legs or behind the back was considered flashy, but people now realize that when done in the correct game situation there is purpose to these moves and an advantage that can be gained from using them.

Once you have your fundamentals down I highly encourage you to work on some more fancy types of moves – it will help you build confidence with the basketball, get your better control, and give you more options for things you can do.

You never know when you may actually NEED to do one of these types of flashy moves, so it is better to have it as an option than not.

With that being said, keep in mind that using a move in the wrong game situation IS a waste of time and completely ineffective.

However, that doesn’t make the move bad, it just makes it the wrong move for that situation.

The 3 biggest questions to ask yourself are:

1. What is the purpose of this move?

2. In what game situations would this move give me an advantage?

3. Does practicing this move improve my skills and confidence?
